Slippers are “house shoes”, the use of which is very typical for Slovenia. Every Slovenian resident, who cares about a clean and tidy home, is supposed to have slippers at home. In Slovenian hallways, the slippers usually wait for their owners to return home and they serve them faithfully for a long time. A few nice ones are always available for guests. Yes, even visitors often take off their shoes when they enter a Slovenian home! Well, to some visitors, especially those who come for a quick or official visit, we usually say: “Come in, welcome! You don’t need to take off your shoes…” And these visitors, knowing the privilege given, carefully wipe their shoes on the doormat and respectfully step forward.

Slippers are quite diverse in both shape and materials. They can be made of various woven fabrics, artificial or natural felt, as well as leather and suede. The most common shapes are those with a covered instep and toes at the front and a visible heel at the back. The sole is usually protected by a thin layer of artificial leather, which makes a characteristic “shh” sound when your slipper touches the ground. What all slippers have in common is that they are clean indoor shoes that have no place on dirty outdoor surfaces.
